authentic selfWhat is the true or authentic self and who are you beyond your ego?  The true you is connected with the spirit of you — many call this your soul.

Mindfulness is one way to create and hold space for this truth of you.

Remember that mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the moment, without judgment.  It involves a complete participation in observing, describing, and accepting what exists in that moment of time.  This is about what is within you, outside of you, and the energy fields between you, others, and the universe.

For starters, try basic mindful breathing.  Simply rest in the space available at the top and bottom of every breath.  Do not hold your breath.  Just notice how it feels to pause until the urge arises to inhale or exhale.

In the moments between your breaths, begin to non-judgmentally observe what you are thinking, feeling, and doing.  The observing part of you is your consciousness or witnessing self, aka your true or authentic self.  What you observe is generally your ego.

When you notice you have begun to judge, just know that is your ego and not the authentic self.  Don’t judge your judging as this is just more of ego.  Simply return to the nonjudgmental observing self.

With practice, mindful self observation becomes something you can do without forethought.  Then no matter the whirlwind around you in your everyday activity, you will retain the capacity to lead with your soul.

Pause to set an intention to create and hold space for your authentic self in your life and your work.  There you will find unconditional love, and an unsurpassed stillness and peace deep within you.
